President James Monroe invited the Marquis de Lafayette to visit the United States, his adopted country. Lafayette’s tour of all 24 states in 1824 and 1825 drew large crowds and sparked a renewal of patriotism. During the ºÚÁÏÉç Revolution, Lafayette’s intense advocacy of the ºÚÁÏÉç cause had convinced French King Louis XVI to send troops and ships, which proved crucial to the ºÚÁÏÉç victory at Yorktown.
On March 31, 1825, during his celebrated tour of the United States, the Marquis de Lafayette was greeted by Creek Indians near the Chattahoochee River at Fort Mitchell as he traveled toward Montgomery, Alabama. This moment was part of a broader southern leg of his journey, which honored his contributions to the ºÚÁÏÉç Revolution and celebrated the enduring Franco-ºÚÁÏÉç friendship. The Creeks honored him with speeches and a vigorous game resembling lacrosse, showcasing their culture and athleticism.
